How waougri/giftint works
Purpose
giftint is an experimental Rust command-line program for recoloring animated GIFs against a supplied text palette. Its intended output is a themed GIF for desktop/ricing use; fidelity and transparency handling are explicitly imperfect.
Entrypoint and Packaging
The executable is defined by the Rust crate manifest at Cargo.toml and starts in src/main.rs. Users invoke it as:
giftint <input.gif> <palette_file> <output.gif>
Cargo builds and runs the native binary; dependency resolution is pinned by Cargo.lock.
CLI Orchestration
src/main.rs is the repository’s single application module and therefore the control boundary for argument handling, file-path selection, GIF processing orchestration, palette loading, and output creation. There is no separate library, service, or web/API layer in this repository.
Palette Input and Mapping
The primary user-provided palette is a newline-oriented text file containing hexadecimal colors. The documented mapping approach associates detected GIF colors with palette colors in order, rather than exposing a configurable matching engine. src/catppuccin-mocha.txt is a bundled palette asset/preset example; external palette files remain the main customization boundary.
GIF Transformation Pipeline
The expected processing flow is:
1. Read the source GIF from the input path.
2. Parse palette colors from the selected palette file.
3. Inspect/remap GIF colors to the target palette.
4. Preserve animation as feasible and write a new GIF to the output path.
This pipeline is concentrated in src/main.rs; no distinct decoder, encoder, or image-processing modules are present in the tree.
Important Boundaries and Limitations
Input GIF decoding and output GIF encoding are file-based boundaries. Palette text parsing is another boundary, accepting hex-coded colors. Transparency is experimental, and color remapping can cause bleeding or detail loss; callers should treat output quality as best-effort rather than lossless conversion.
Runtime and External Dependencies
The material runtime is a native Rust CLI built with Cargo (Cargo.toml, Cargo.lock). It operates on local filesystem assets and does not indicate network services, databases, background workers, or deployment infrastructure.
Components 13
Rust Build
- Cargo manifest · Defines the native executable and dependencies.
Cargo.toml - Dependency lock · Pins resolved dependencies.
Cargo.lock - Cargo · Builds and runs the native binary.
Local Inputs
- Source GIF
- Palette file · Newline-oriented user-selected palette colors.
- Mocha preset · Example palette usable in place of an external palette.
src/catppuccin-mocha.txt
CLI Transformation
- giftint · Single-module control boundary for the recoloring workflow.
src/main.rs - CLI arguments · Accepts input GIF, palette file, and output GIF paths.
src/main.rs - GIF decode
src/main.rs - Palette parsing
src/main.rs - Color remapping · Maps detected GIF colors to palette colors in order; quality is best-effort.
src/main.rs - GIF encode · Writes animation where feasible; transparency may be imperfect.
