How thewknd/veml6040 works
Purpose and Entry Points
This is an Arduino C++ library for the Vishay VEML6040 RGBW color sensor. It communicates with the sensor over the board’s I2C bus, configures measurement behavior, and exposes color-channel readings. The public library interface is src/veml6040.h; implementation is in src/veml6040.cpp.
Arduino Library Packaging
Arduino tooling discovers the library through library.properties, with library.json providing compatible metadata for other Arduino library ecosystems. The expected user entry point is an Arduino sketch that includes the library and initializes the sensor before sampling it.
Paths: library.properties, library.json, src/veml6040.h.
Sensor Driver Boundary
The veml6040 class/module is the hardware abstraction boundary. It should encapsulate VEML6040 register addressing, I2C transactions, sensor configuration, and conversion of register contents into caller-visible channel values. Application sketches should not need to manipulate sensor registers directly.
Paths: src/veml6040.h, src/veml6040.cpp.
Measurement Modes and Control Flow
The driver supports distinct sensor operating/configuration behavior reflected by the examples:
• Automatic mode: the sketch delegates measurement timing/configuration to the library’s automatic behavior.
• Forced mode: the sketch explicitly triggers or controls individual measurements.
Both flows follow Arduino’s setup/loop model: initialize serial output and I2C/sensor state during setup, then repeatedly acquire RGBW values and publish them through the serial interface.
Paths: Examples/auto_mode/auto_mode.ino, Examples/force_mode/force_mode.ino, src/veml6040.cpp.
Data Flow
Physical light reaches the VEML6040, which produces red, green, blue, and white channel measurements. The Arduino reads those values over I2C through the driver, and the example sketches send resulting measurements to the serial monitor/plotter at 9600 baud. This makes serial output the primary observable application boundary.
Paths: src/veml6040.h, Examples/auto_mode/auto_mode.ino, Examples/force_mode/force_mode.ino.
Runtime and Hardware Dependencies
Runtime is the Arduino embedded environment, using Arduino’s I2C facilities and serial API. Required infrastructure is an Arduino-compatible board, a VEML6040 connected to its standard I2C SDA/SCL bus, and appropriate voltage compatibility; the sensor itself is 3.3 V unless a breakout board provides level shifting. No network, backend, or cloud services are present.
