Scope and Status

EMS is currently a frontend-only React dashboard foundation for employee, department, and task management. The README describes a future Node.js/Express/MongoDB backend, but no backend, API client, database model, or service code exists in this repository tree.

Runtime and Entry Points

The deployable/runtime surface is a Vite React application under frontend/.

• Browser bootstrap: frontend/src/main.jsx

• Dependency and script boundary: frontend/package.json

frontend/index.html hosts the browser mount point. Vite compiles and serves the React SPA.

Application Shell and Navigation

The reusable shell separates persistent navigation/chrome from page content.

• Primary navigation: frontend/src/components/layout/Sidebar.jsx

• Header/user-information area: frontend/src/components/layout/Header.jsx

App.jsx is the route/control boundary: it connects navigation to the dashboard and management page views. React Router is identified by the README as the navigation mechanism.

Page-Level Feature Boundaries

Pages represent the primary product domains and are the intended integration points for future management workflows and APIs.

• Department domain: frontend/src/pages/Departments.jsx

• Task domain: frontend/src/pages/Tasks.jsx

Only the dashboard is described as implemented; the other pages establish the UI/domain boundary but are not evidence of completed CRUD features.

Dashboard Composition

The dashboard is assembled from domain-specific presentation components rather than a monolithic view.

• Recent employee listing: frontend/src/components/dashboard/RecentEmployees.jsx

• Department summary: frontend/src/components/dashboard/DepartmentOverview.jsx

• Task summary: frontend/src/components/dashboard/TaskOverview.jsx

frontend/src/pages/Dashboard.jsx coordinates these widgets. This is the likely future consumer of a consolidated dashboard API or multiple domain queries.

Current Data Flow and Future Service Boundary

Dashboard components currently consume local/static data from frontend/src/data/dashboardData.js; data flows from that module into the dashboard page and its widgets. There is no network, persistence, authentication, or server-side boundary implemented.

The planned architecture introduces:

1. React pages/components issuing API requests.

2. Express REST endpoints for employees, departments, tasks, and dashboard statistics.

3. MongoDB collections/models as persistence.

4. Responses replacing dashboardData.js and eventually supplying management-page data.

Styling and Asset Boundary

Global and application-level styling reside in frontend/src/index.css and frontend/src/App.css; component/page styling appears to be consolidated rather than colocated. Static browser assets belong in frontend/public/, while bundled source assets are under frontend/src/assets/.
