How kalaiselviselvam21/helpdesk-ticketing-system-using-django- works
1. Purpose and runtime entry points
This is a Django server-rendered HelpDesk system for authenticated users to create, track, update, close, and reopen support tickets, with an administrative overview. Django starts through HelpDesk/manage.py for management commands and through HelpDesk/helpdesk/wsgi.py or HelpDesk/helpdesk/asgi.py for deployment. Project configuration and root routing are in HelpDesk/helpdesk/settings.py and HelpDesk/helpdesk/urls.py.
2. Application boundaries
The repository is split into two Django apps:
• Accounts owns user-facing authentication, registration, profile, and user-list behavior: HelpDesk/accounts/models.py, HelpDesk/accounts/views.py, HelpDesk/accounts/urls.py.
• Tickets owns ticket domain state, categorization, ticket workflows, filtering/search, and administration: HelpDesk/tickets/models.py, HelpDesk/tickets/views.py, HelpDesk/tickets/urls.py.
The project URL configuration composes these app-level route boundaries rather than placing feature logic in the project package.
3. Identity and access flow
Account requests are routed to account views, which use account forms/models and render account templates. Core UI surfaces are HelpDesk/templates/accounts/login.html, HelpDesk/templates/accounts/register.html, and HelpDesk/templates/accounts/profile.html. Authentication is the gate between anonymous visitors and ticket-management actions; account administration is integrated through HelpDesk/accounts/admin.py.
4. Ticket lifecycle domain
The ticket app is the primary business subsystem. Its models define persistent ticket and category-related entities in HelpDesk/tickets/models.py, with schema history in HelpDesk/tickets/migrations/0001_initial.py. Ticket views implement lifecycle actions—creation, detail viewing, editing, closing, and reopening—backed by HelpDesk/tickets/forms.py and routed in HelpDesk/tickets/urls.py.
The principal UI flow is:
1. User enters ticket creation or update forms.
2. Ticket views validate and persist through Django ORM.
3. Ticket status determines active/closed workflow and available transitions.
4. Detail, list, dashboard, and admin views render status/category-filtered data.
5. Presentation and dashboard surfaces
Django templates provide the web UI, with shared layout in HelpDesk/templates/base.html and global styling in HelpDesk/static/css/main.css. Ticket-facing screens are separated by use case:
• User dashboard and ticket listing: HelpDesk/templates/tickets/dashboard.html, HelpDesk/templates/tickets/ticket_list.html
• Ticket mutation and lifecycle confirmation: HelpDesk/templates/tickets/ticket_create.html, HelpDesk/templates/tickets/ticket_confirm_close.html
• Administrative aggregate view: HelpDesk/templates/tickets/admin_overview.html
This is server-side HTML rendering rather than a separate frontend service.
6. Persistence, administration, and operational setup
Django ORM is the persistence boundary. The README identifies MySQL as the intended database, while the checked-in HelpDesk/db.sqlite3 indicates a local SQLite development database may currently be present. Database selection and installed-app configuration are controlled by HelpDesk/helpdesk/settings.py.
Both domains expose Django admin registration via HelpDesk/accounts/admin.py and HelpDesk/tickets/admin.py. Initial or demonstration data can be populated through the custom Django command HelpDesk/tickets/management/commands/seed_data.py, invoked through manage.py.
